LIfe at Sea on the Pacific

Life at sea can be fun, relaxing, stimulating, enticing and meditative.  Here we are cruising on the Pacific at sunset while students jog on the deck.

Welcome toYokohama

Energetic Taiko drummers welcomed us to Japan today

Fun at sea

Zumba is but one of many exercise options on the ship. Our group gets up at 6:45 and rotates between Zumba, circuit, kickboxing and yoga. Capoeira, salsa, street dancing, and the seven minute workout keep us moving

Our feathered friends

These birds followed us and flirted with us daily in the middle of the Pacific.

The storm we avoided!

Captain Roman diverted 500 miles at the cost of $100,000 to avoid this monster storm and 50 foot waves. We were so glad he did!!

Sunset on the ship

We have made it across the big blue and awesome Pacific! These are the sights that graced our journey

Hilo soundscape: reflection one

A farmer's market in Hilo provided inspiration for a sound recording and a writing reflection:

"The first thing I heard in Hilo was a confab, conglomeration, contrast of lilting, laughing language:  ha,ha humming, harmony of strumming syllables accompanied by thrum, drum, talk/song."

Building a Community through kinesthetic learning

Taking a class relating to our soundscape is enhancing my voyage experience.  Today we focused on the felt rhythms of the ship.  One of the most important aspects of sailing on SAS is the building of the ship's community.  We bond in incredibly cohesive ways.  Maybe in subconscious ways we are incorporating the sounds, textures, movement of the ship into a kinesthetically complete learning bubble.  We are mentally ingesting learned data, emotional experiences while simultaneously imprinting the sounds and motion of ship and sea.

My first SAS port

I am having a great time visiting JB in sunny Southern California. We walked the beach in Venice, found the central canal, sampled an In and Out Burger and enjoyed the Hotel del Coronado.

Age-related brain waves or Twilight Zone

Planning my last minute errands and trip preparations as I purchased my morning coffee, I experienced a moment of pre-trip jitters. Why am I sailing now? How will all my volunteer activities fare without me? Is it a good time to be gone from family? Etc! I said a farewell to the friendly staff at Starbucks and headed to the post office in a reflective mind-set. As I approached the door, I heard wonderful Indian music being piped over a sound system. Wow, I thought, I love this music. My mood lifted. I got in the Semester at Sea frame of mind. Music like this is representative of the SAS experience. I thanked the clerk for the wonderful music and told her to thank whomever was playing this particular tune. I walked out of the PO and the music was still playing. I was ready to sail!

On entering my car, when the music was still on, I realized my ITunes on my phone had independently picked this tune to broadcast Loud and Live. A message from above? Do de do do do de do do ( twilight zone music). Or simply a technical glitch?

Whatever...ready to go!
